Colorful velvet rainbow crochet baby mobile with soft balls

FREE CROCHET PATTERN • CROCHET FAVORITES

This is the simplest mobile in the Nursery Dreams collection: one small crochet ball repeated 24 times, then turned into eight hanging strands. The result looks playful and polished, but the actual crochet is intentionally repetitive — perfect when you want an easy nursery project with maximum freedom in the color palette.

Twenty-four soft crochet balls create a colorful mobile with lots of movement.

Materials

Velvet or chenille yarn in your chosen colors

4.0 mm crochet hook (sample size)

Polyester fiberfill

Strong white yarn or hanging cord

Two-part mobile hanging frame or similar secure support

Small wooden beads (optional)

Yarn needle

Scissors

Stitch marker

If stuffing shows through the stitches, use a smaller hook. Smooth yarn can replace velvet yarn if you prefer a more defined stitch texture.

Gauge

Gauge is not critical, but consistency matters because all 24 balls should match. With velvet yarn and a 4 mm hook, the sample R1 circle of 6 sc measured just under 7/8 in / 2.2 cm in diameter.

Begin stuffing before R9. Add a little more before R10, but do not overstuff. Leave the final opening accessible if you plan to string the balls before sewing them closed.

ROUND NOTE

R4 through R8 covers five rounds. Work five full rounds of 18 sc.

2. Plan the 24-Color Batch

The sample uses many pastel and bright colors, generally no more than two balls in one color. You can simplify the palette dramatically and still get a strong result.

Pastel rainbow: 8 colors x 3 balls

Ombre: three shades repeated from light to dark

Monochrome: one color family with mixed yarn textures

Seasonal: earth tones, winter neutrals or spring brights

Efficient batch workflow

Choose 6–12 colors and write down how many balls you want in each.

Crochet all balls through R8 before moving to stuffing so size and tension stay consistent.

Stuff the batch together, then work R9–R10 on all pieces.

Leave the final openings unclosed until the hanging yarn has been threaded through each ball.

3. Assemble the Hanger

The sample uses a two-piece mobile hanging frame, strong white yarn and small wooden beads. Your exact frame can vary; keep the center suspension secure and the two frame sections aligned.

Cut a long strand of strong white yarn and fold it in half.

At the fold, form the top hanging loop and tie it securely.

Thread on a small wooden bead if desired.

Pass both yarn ends through the first frame section from top to bottom.

Split the two strands, wrap them around opposite sides of the frame several times, then secure with a double knot below the frame.

Repeat with the second frame section, using a bead as a spacer if desired.

Finish the central suspension with a secure knot and weave the ends instead of leaving loose tails.

SAMPLE HANGER LENGTH

The sample top hanger measures approximately 5 in / 12.7 cm long.

4. String 8 Strands of 3 Balls

Cut one hanging strand about 2 ft / 61 cm long. Make a double or triple knot at one end.

With a yarn needle, enter through the unfinished opening of the first ball and exit through the top center. Pull until the knot sits securely beneath the top of the ball.

A few inches above the first ball, tie another knot. Thread the second ball onto the strand so the knot sits directly beneath its top.

Repeat once more for the third ball.

Sew the bottom opening of all three balls closed and hide the ends.

Thread the top of the strand through a hole or attachment point on the frame from bottom to top. Adjust the length, then secure with a double knot.

Repeat for all 8 strands.

SPACING RULE

The eight strands should feel related in length, but they do not need to be identical. Small differences create movement without making the mobile look uneven.

The finished mobile works best when color and strand length are balanced around the frame.

5. Balance, Trim & Finish

24 balls completed

8 strands of 3 balls

All ball openings sewn closed

All hanging knots secure

Frame hangs level

No loose yarn ends or reachable beads

Mobile kept completely out of reach

Start with four strands at the major frame points, then fill the spaces between them with the remaining four. Alternate light and dark colors so one side does not appear visually heavier.

Strands 1 + 5Use your darkest or strongest accent colors.
Strands 2 + 6Use soft mid-tone colors.
Strands 3 + 7Use light colors to open the composition.
Strands 4 + 8Repeat one favorite color to tie the mobile together.

Nursery Safety

Use this as decorative hanging nursery decor only. Keep every ball, bead, cord and hanging element completely out of reach. Do not place loose components inside the crib. Check knots and suspension points regularly, and remove the mobile from the crib area by 5 months or when the baby begins pushing up on hands and knees, whichever comes first.

FAQ

Can I use regular acrylic or cotton yarn instead of velvet?

Yes. Smooth yarn produces a more defined stitch texture. Adjust the hook size so the fabric stays dense enough to contain the stuffing.

How many crochet balls do I need?

Make 24 balls total, then divide them into 8 hanging strands of 3.

Do all eight strands need to be exactly the same length?

No. Small differences can create attractive movement. The overall mobile should still feel balanced when viewed from every side.

Can I make a neutral version instead of a rainbow?

Yes. A monochrome, ombre or neutral palette works just as well because the structure depends on repetition rather than specific colors.
